Let them eat cake (and berries)
Hello lovelies!
How was the weekend? Mine was full of family, birthday cake, blueberries, blackberries, and bunnies.
Dennis and I headed to Lancaster (Pennsylvania) on Saturday for my grandmother’s surprise 80th birthday party.
I volunteered to order and buy my grandmother’s cake, so I did a bit of searching and discovered a shop called Rebecca’s Heavenly Goodies in the town next to mine. Rebecca’s had rave reviews, and my mom said that her cakes are known to be beautiful and delicious.
She couldn’t have been more right.
Look how pretty.
More important than the aesthetics, this cake may have been the very best cake I have ever had the pleasure of eating in my entire life. A bold statement, I know, but honestly the icing rocked my world. It was sweet, but not too rich, buttery, creamy- everything good icing should be. And I actually ate some of the cake part. (I’m totally that girl who licks all the icing off of cake and just leaves the cake part looking pitiful on the plate.)
I had ordered the ebony and ivory cake, so it was chocolate cake on the bottom with a layer of chocolate mousse sandwiched between chocolate cake on top and buttercream icing. Grandma loved it. And so did everyone at the party.
I actually had the opportunity to showcase my mad cake cutting skills, too. Before I met Dennis, I catered every single weekend of my life for 2 years while I was earning my master’s degree. I totally didn’t have a social life, but I did attend at least 100 weddings in which I was always given the responsibility of cutting the wedding cake.
So as you can imagine I’m quite the skilled cake cutter. That would look good on a resume, right?
Besides the awesome cake, it was so cute to see my grandma hang out with her friends. She had a great time, and one of the guys there was totally putting the moves on her. I love my grandma; she’s the best!
Dennis and I are pretty embarrassed to admit it, but we were completely exhausted after our travels and day spent partying with 80-year-olds. We crashed on the couch at 7 o’clock and turned down an invitation from some friends to head to the local bar. Instead we got wrapped up in watching War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning. It was an awful movie, but it still had me on the edge of my seat for 2 hours until I drifted to sleep at midnight.
At least I had enough energy yesterday to go to a zumba class and berry picking.
These are the largest blackberries that I have ever seen!
I also spotted this little guy/girl hanging out in the yard.
Hope it wasn’t the mother looking for her babies. Maybe she was just jealous of my berries.
Hope you had a fantastic and fun weekend!

GORGEOUS cake! So pretttyyyy!!
I’ll take a piece of that delicious cake, please!
I’ll have a piece, too! That cake does look gorgeous and I totally believe you when you say it is the best you’ve ever had. The way you described the icing has me drooling!
And what gorgeous photos – those berries are beautiful.
